Why the price range is so wide:
Clean and sorted carbide inserts can pay up to ₹8,900/kg because they contain higher tungsten and cobalt content and are easier to recycle and process. Mixed or contaminated carbide scrap pays lower because it requires extra sorting, testing, and recovery work. The same carbide scrap can be worth ₹500–1,500 more per kg simply by sorting it properly before selling. Price factors —

What determines your exact price?

The ranges above are wide because carbide is not one material. Four key factors determine where your lot lands within the range.

Cobalt content (%)

Carbide is a mixture of tungsten carbide particles bound by cobalt metal. More cobalt = more value. CNC inserts typically have 6–15% cobalt. Mining buttons often yield 10–20%. Test and tell us exactly what grade you have.

High cobalt inserts can fetch ₹500–600/kg more than low cobalt material.

Grade & type sorting

Mixed, unsorted carbide pays ₹300–600/kg less than properly sorted material. Even a basic separation — solid inserts in one pile, end mills in another, mixed tooling in a third — significantly improves your rate.

5 minutes of sorting before calling can add ₹3,000–5,000 to a 10 kg lot.

Cleanliness

Carbide covered in cutting oil, coolant, or mixed with steel chips pays less. Clean, dry carbide gets the top rate. Rinse with water and dry if possible. Remove obvious steel contamination before selling.

Clean carbide vs oily mixed carbide: up to ₹400/kg difference on the same grade.

Global tungsten market

Carbide scrap rates in India move with global APT prices. In 2025–26, APT has risen sharply due to China’s export restrictions — pushing carbide scrap prices to multi-year highs.

Current prices are 40–60% higher than mid-2023—good time to sell if you’ve been holding stock.

How to sort for the best price

You don’t need to be an expert. Even a basic sort before calling us can add thousands of rupees to your payout.

Do these before pickup

Simple actions that improve your rate

Use a magnet to separate HSS (sticks) from carbide (doesn’t stick). Never mix them.

Put solid inserts (small geometric pieces — CNMG, TNMG etc.) in one container.

Put solid end mills and drills in a separate container.

Carbide rods and blanks should be separate from everything else.

Rinse oily material with water and let it dry if possible.

Remove carbide inserts from holders/tool bodies where easy.

Avoid these mistakes

Common errors that reduce your payout

Don’t mix HSS and carbide in the same container — most costly mistake

Don’t throw away small or broken pieces — even fragments have full carbide value.

Don’t store carbide in steel drums or boxes without separating the chips — hard to sort later.

Don’t assume something is “not carbide” because it looks worn or coated — send a photo first.

Don’t sell in a rush to a local kabaadiwala — they price carbide as steel at ₹40–60/kg.

Don’t mix carbide with coolant sludge or grinding swarf — drops the grade significantly.
Real sorting example — what 10 kg of workshop scrap looks like:

❌ Sold unsorted, mixed with HSS and coolant residue

₹900/kg × 10 kg = ₹9,000

Carbide inserts sorted (6 kg) + HSS separate (4 kg) + washedunsorted, mixed with HSS and coolant residue

₹2,000 × 6 = ₹12,000 + ₹75 × 4 = ₹300 = ₹12,300

By sorting the same 10 kg lot, you earn ₹3,300 more — a 37% improvement. Takes about 15 minutes.

Market context

Why carbide scrap prices are high in 2026

China's tungsten export restrictions changed everything

China controls over 80% of global tungsten supply — the raw material from which tungsten carbide is made. In late 2024, China significantly restricted exports of APT (ammonium paratungstate), the primary processed tungsten compound used in carbide manufacturing worldwide.

This created an immediate global supply squeeze. Manufacturers in Japan, Germany, South Korea, and the USA who depend on Chinese APT suddenly needed alternative sources — including recycled carbide scrap from India and other regions.

The result: carbide scrap prices in India are now 40–60% higher than mid-2023. The structural factors driving this — China’s strategic interest in controlling critical minerals, growing EV and defence tungsten demand, and limited alternative supply — are unlikely to reverse soon.

For sellers in India, this is a significant opportunity. Carbide scrap that was collected over years at low prices is now worth considerably more at current market rates.

Price-related questions

Today’s indicative rates (May 2026): Solid carbide inserts (sorted, clean) — ₹6,800–7,400/kg. Carbide rods and blanks — ₹6,700–7,800/kg. End mills and drills — ₹6,500–7,900/kg. Mixed / unsorted carbide — ₹4900–6,400/kg. HSS M42 — ₹300–440/kg. HSS M2 — ₹260–285/kg. These ranges are indicative — your exact price depends on grade, cobalt content, and condition. Send a photo for a confirmed quote.

The range exists because “carbide scrap” is not one material. A clean, sorted, high-cobalt CNC insert pays ₹7,400/kg. The same weight of contaminated, mixed, low-cobalt scrap might pay ₹4900/kg. Once Wr sees a photo of your material, he gives a confirmed single price — not a range. The photo assessment takes minutes.

Sorting can add ₹300–600/kg to your rate — sometimes more. For a 10 kg lot, that’s ₹3,000–6,000 extra for 15–20 minutes of sorting. The key sorts are: (1) Separate HSS from carbide using a magnet. (2) Separate solid inserts from end mills and drills. (3) Remove obvious steel contamination. We guide you on sorting if you ask before pickup.

Current prices are at multi-year highs driven by China’s APT export restrictions. The structural factors — China’s strategic control, growing EV and defence tungsten demand, and limited alternative supply — suggest elevated prices for the medium term. However, there can be short-term corrections. Tungsten carbide contains 80–90% tungsten by weight — one of the heaviest and rarest industrial metals. HSS contains tungsten too (5–18%) but the tungsten is in a steel matrix, so extraction is harder and the yield is lower. Carbide scrap can be reprocessed almost entirely back into usable tungsten carbide — making it extremely valuable to recyclers. HSS has less tungsten content and more complex processing requirements.

Yes — the price per kg is the same regardless of which NCR city you’re in. Free pickup means there’s no logistics cost adjustment for NCR locations. For cities like Jaipur or further afield, the material price remains the same, but we discuss logistics practicalities when you contact us.
