What actually sets your price
Solid inserts vs. mixed scrap
A clean indexable insert or solid end mill is close to pure tungsten carbide. Grinding sludge, swarf and mixed tool-room floor sweep run lower — they’re priced as a separate lot, not blended into your clean material’s rate.
The metal holding it together
Cutting-grade carbide is commonly bonded with roughly 6–12% cobalt. Cobalt has its own market value, so grade matters — a die or punch with a different binder ratio doesn’t price the same as a drill insert.
Steel shanks and coating
Brazed tooling — a carbide tip on a steel shank — is weighed, then the recoverable carbide is separated and priced on its own. We show you that split on the ticket, not after you’ve left.
How the price actually moves week to week
Tungsten carbide scrap isn’t priced off a fixed local rate card the way ordinary steel scrap often is. The tungsten content in your inserts, drills, or dies has its own international market — tracked through tungsten concentrate and APT (ammonium paratungstate) pricing — and that market moves independently of what’s happening in the Indian steel scrap trade. When APT prices move internationally, the rate we can offer for carbide scrap moves within days, sometimes before local competitors have adjusted.
This is also why a flat “₹X per kg for all carbide” quote from a generic scrap dealer should make you cautious. It usually means one of two things: either they’re not actually grading your material by tungsten and cobalt content, or they’re not tracking the international market closely enough to know what the material is worth this week. - Indexable inserts & tipsThe most common lot we see, from CNC, VMC and lathe tooling. Small, uniform pieces with minimal contamination — usually the highest per-kg value in a mixed lot.
- Solid carbide rods, drills & end millsFull-carbide construction with no steel or binder to separate — priced highest per kg of any form we buy. Broken or worn drill bits and end mills from a tool room fall here.
- Brazed tool bitsA carbide tip brazed onto a steel shank, common in lathe and shaping tools. We separate the carbide from the steel on-site before weighing either component.
- Dies, punches & rock-drill buttonsDenser, heavier-duty forms used in stamping, forming and drilling. Graded the same way as smaller tooling — by content, not by assumption.
HSS (High Speed Steel) tool scrap
Not everything worn out in your tool room is carbide. High Speed Steel tooling is a different alloy family entirely — fully magnetic, no tungsten-carbide/cobalt binder — and it’s priced against its own tool-steel and alloy content, not the tungsten carbide rate. We buy both, graded and priced separately on the same visit.
- M2General-purpose HSS — the most common grade in drills, taps and milling cutters.
- M35Cobalt-enhanced (~5% Co) for tougher cutting jobs — common in industrial-grade drill bits.
- M42High-cobalt (~8% Co) grade for heat resistance — found in premium taps and hobs.
- T15Tungsten-type HSS with high vanadium — wear-resistant, used in heavy-duty broaches.
- Drill bits, taps & reamersBroken or worn-out sets from a tool room floor — the most common HSS lot.
- Milling cutters & hobsSolid HSS or with a carbide insert — we separate and price each material.
- Lathe & planer tool bitsSolid HSS blanks, ground or unground.
- Slitting saws & broachesHeavier HSS forms, priced by weight and grade.
A quick way to tell them apart before you call: HSS responds strongly to a magnet and sounds like ordinary steel when tapped; carbide is only weakly magnetic and feels noticeably heavier for its size, with a duller, denser tap. If you’re not sure, bring both — we sort and price each on-site, no guesswork on your end.

Why grade it separately instead of selling it as mixed metal scrap
Delhi has no shortage of general scrap buyers — every industrial estate has several. Most of them buy carbide tooling the same way they buy any other metal: by eye, at a flat rate, with no separation between the tungsten carbide and the steel shank or coating it’s attached to. That flat rate is almost always a discount against what the carbide content is actually worth, because the buyer isn’t tracking the international tungsten market and has no reason to grade it out. Weighing and grading it as its own material, in front of you, is what closes that gap — the number you see is the number you get paid, the same day.
