Weekly Market Note  Week of 7 July 2026

The tungsten market has corrected sharply from its February–April 2026 peak. Chinese domestic APT fell to RMB 660,000/t on July 7 — down 51% from its peak — and scrap carbide rod in China dropped to RMB 760/kg on July 8. The correction is driven by three factors: weak downstream demand as end-users reduce inventory, seasonal off-season pressure, and buyers refusing to pay elevated prices while raw material costs remain high. India FOB drill bit scrap was assessed at $140–150/kg by SMM — down 6.8% week on week, with alloy insert scrap at $130–140/kg. Indian traders are pricing against China. The market is currently in a standoff — sellers unwilling to drop prices due to holding costs, buyers refusing to chase. For Indian sellers: prices remain significantly above mid-2023 levels (+11.8% YTD for carbide rod despite the correction). Rotterdam APT reference: $2,800–3,280/mtu (Week 15, April 2026 peak — updated when new Fastmarkets data publishes). China’s 15-firm export license structure through 2027 remains the structural floor. Whether prices recover depends on downstream demand resuming — monitor Q3 purchasing activity in China and EU as the key signal.

Do you have pure tungsten or tungsten carbide?

These are completely different materials with different prices and different buyers. Most people searching “tungsten scrap price” actually have tungsten carbide scrap — CNC inserts, end mills, carbide rods. If that’s you, see our carbide scrap price page. This page covers pure tungsten metal, tungsten alloys, and tungsten compounds.

Pure Tungsten / Tungsten Alloy

  • Greyish-white, bright metallic surface
  • Extremely heavy — 19.3 g/cc (denser than lead)
  • Weakly magnetic or non-magnetic
  • Can be bent slightly or machined (unlike carbide)
  • Examples: TIG electrodes, balance weights, radiation shielding, filaments, wire, rods

Tungsten Carbide (WC) Scrap

  • Dark grey to black, matte finish
  • Extremely hard — cannot be scratched with a steel file
  • Non-magnetic or very weakly magnetic
  • Brittle — chips and cracks rather than bending
  • Examples: CNC inserts, end mills, drills, dies, carbide rods

Quick test: Take a steel file and try to scratch the surface. If it scratches easily — it may be pure tungsten metal or WHA. If the file barely marks it and you can hear a hard scraping sound — it’s almost certainly tungsten carbide. Send us a photo on WhatsApp if you’re unsure — we identify for free with no obligation.

The tungsten market in 2026 — what happened and why it matters

Tungsten prices have done something in the past 18 months that almost no metal does — they moved structurally, not cyclically. This is not a demand spike. It is a supply architecture change driven by China. Understanding this is the difference between selling at the right time and selling too early.

How we got here — the timeline

Key events that moved India tungsten scrap prices

2020–2023

APT CIF Rotterdam traded below $250–300/mtu. India tungsten scrap prices were low and largely ignored by the market. Most Indian sellers dealt with general scrap dealers at far below tungsten’s actual value.

Late 2023

China announces export licensing requirements for tungsten products. This signals the beginning of supply control. Western buyers begin building safety stocks. APT starts moving upward.

Feb 2025

China’s MOFCOM announces immediate export controls on APT and other tungsten products. Only licensed firms can export. This is the trigger event. APT Rotterdam begins its historic run — from ~$350/mtu to over $1,000/mtu within months.

Jan–Feb 2026

APT CIF Rotterdam surges from $900 to $1,650–1,900/mtu in six weeks. Western buyers scramble for any available tungsten. Indian scrap prices follow global levels.

June 2026

APT CIF Rotterdam reaches $2,900–3,210/mtu — up 575% year on year. China designates just 15 firms authorised to export tungsten through 2027. Chinese domestic prices begin to decouple from export prices — a new market structure is forming.

July 2026 →

Sharp correction in China. APT domestic falls to RMB 660,000/t — down 51% from peak but still +11.8% YTD. Carbide rod scrap drops to RMB 760/kg. Market enters standoff — sellers holding on cost basis, buyers refusing elevated prices amid weak demand. Indian scrap prices follow, falling 6.8% week on week. Structural export controls remain in place through 2027.

The tungsten market in 2026 — what happened and why it matters

APT is the central intermediate in the tungsten supply chain. Everything flows from it — tungsten ore becomes APT, which becomes tungsten metal, tungsten carbide powder, and ferrotungsten. When APT moves, every tungsten-containing material moves with it — including your scrap.

FAQ  —-

Tungsten scrap price — common questions

Tungsten scrap prices in India vary significantly by grade. As of July 2026, pure tungsten scrap (wire, rods, electrodes) trades in the ₹4,500–7,500/kg range. Tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) is in the ₹2,800–4,200/kg range. Ferrotungsten scrap is ₹1,800–2,800/kg. These are India market ranges — your confirmed rate depends on material, purity, and quantity.

China controls approximately 80% of the global tungsten supply. In February 2025, China’s Ministry of Commerce implemented export controls on tungsten products, including APT, requiring export licenses from a restricted set of firms. This created immediate supply tightness in Western markets. APT CIF Rotterdam has risen over 575% year-on-year by mid-2026. Indian scrap prices have followed this structural move. The controls are expected to remain in place through at least 2027, supporting elevated prices.

APT — ammonium paratungstate — is the primary intermediate compound produced from tungsten ore. It is the global pricing benchmark for tungsten. The APT CIF Rotterdam price ($2,900–3,210/mtu as of early July 2026) sets the reference point for all tungsten products globally — including Indian scrap. When APT rises, India buy rates for tungsten scrap rise proportionally. This is why understanding APT is essential if you want to time your sale correctly.

Completely different materials. Pure tungsten scrap contains elemental tungsten metal — wire, rods, electrodes, balance weights, WHA. Tungsten carbide scrap contains a compound of tungsten and carbon bonded with cobalt — CNC inserts, end mills, carbide drills, carbide dies. Most people in Indian industry have carbide scrap, not pure tungsten. Both have significant value. See our carbide scrap price page if you have cutting tools or inserts.

Every Monday. Global benchmarks (APT Rotterdam, China FOB) are updated from Fastmarkets and SMM data published the previous week. India market rates are updated based on our transaction data and market assessment. The weekly market note reflects the most significant price development of the past 7 days. This makes it the most current India-focused tungsten price reference available.
